Tired of those bland interior colors? Looking for a different paint color idea, something that matches your personality? Let science enlighten the way.

Since time memorable prominent scientists like Newton have been working on and advancing the theory of colors and their combinations. Nowadays, color theory has become the go-to choice of many decorators for choosing the right paint color idea.

Color Theory

Having been used by some of the most famous painters of all time, color theory has been developing since even before Aristotle. It has many forms but at its core, color theory is a framework designed as a guide to color mixing and the visual effects of different combinations. Here are some common features of the theory;

1. Red, blue, and yellow are the three primary colors that cannot be created by any combination.

2. Secondary colors (orange, purple, and green) can be created by mixing primary colors.

3. Different combinations of both primary and secondary colors can be used to create tertiary colors.

Color Wheel

The color wheel is a practical instrument used to derive paint color ideas using the color theory. There are many types of color wheels, depending on the number of colors each wheel represents. Some have only 6 while others have more than 30.

Before using the color wheel, though, we need to talk about the color scheme.

Color Scheme

Color schemes are used to figure out combinations of color based on their contrasting values. Following are the most popular schemes:

· Monotonous Scheme is the combination of the same color with lighter or darker shades.

· Complimentary Scheme consists of highly contrasting colors that are exactly opposite to each other on the color wheel.

· Triadic Scheme is composed of three colors that are equally spaced from each other. For example, in a wheel of 12 colors, every fourth color starting from the first one is triadic to each other.

· Analogous Scheme is the combination of three colors that stick right next to each other on the color wheel.

Painting Your Home

Having developed an understanding of the underlying theory we’re ready to talk about combinations complimenting your style.

- The Elegant Minimalist

For people looking for a modest and refined feeling, going monotonous is the way. Although there’s nothing wrong with using the same shade, don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations; who knows you might find the results surprisingly sophisticated.

- The Bold Stylist

For individuals looking to make a statement, complimentary schemes present shockingly contrasting yet complimenting combinations. Just be sure to use one color as the dominant base and the other as an uplifting accent.

- The Vogue Adventurist

If you’re looking for a painting color idea that instills excitement, then triadic schemes offer vibrant combinations that’ll engage both the mind and senses. Like complementing schemes, triadic schemes have a dominant base color, with the other two used as an accent.

- The Charmingly Relaxed

Last but not the least, for those who want a pleasant and relaxing interior that fits in with any furniture, white is the only choice. And by only I mean the best because long gone are the days of the singular bland shade of white, nowadays we have many more options to choose from.

Conclusion

Although meant to help you choose combinations matching your style, this article is only meant to help you select the combination of basic colors and not complicated stuff like hue, saturation, tint, and value. Because in my opinion these choices are better left with the painter.
